Types of Anxiety Disorders

There are many types of anxiety disorders. Here is a list of some of the common ones. For more information, click on the link.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

When a person experiences generalized anxiety , they are anxious about everything. I like to say "Worry now and avoid the rush." This is because if you have generalized anxiety, you will worry aobut things months in advance. You worry excessively about things that most people don't worry that much about.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive compulsive disorder consist of both obsessions and compulsions. Actually you can need to have either obsessions or compulsions; you don't need to experience both. An obsession is a thought or an image that you can't get out of your head. A compulsion is a behavior that you do repeatedly.

Panic Disorder

Panic Disorder is what is diagnosed when a person has panic attacks. There is no separate diagnosis of panic attacks. Panic disorder consists of recurrent and unexpected panic attacks, along with worry about what the attacks mean, great concern about having another panic attack and marked change in behavior as a result of the panic attacks.

Social Anxiety Disorder

This is also known as Social Phobia. This condition arises when you feel extreme fear about being in a social situation, especially when you are meeting new people or are required to perform in some capacity. You are afraid that you will be judged and that the judgement will be negative.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

This is an anxiety disorder that sometimes occurs when a person has been involved in a violent, or frightening situation such as a car accident, childhood abuse, war or natural disasters. The traumatic event can actually happen to you or you can see it happen. It is manifested by symptoms of reliving the trauma, feelings of numbness, hyperarousal, and avoidance. It was originally given special attention during World War II, when it was called Combat Fatigue. Currently, many veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as Gulf War veterans are being treated for this illness.
